Google’s own social networking experiment, Google+, got updated today with a new shiny UI. Instead of featuring a bar on top with quick links to certain area’s (Circles, photos, hangouts, etc) they are now on a beautiful ribbon on the left side of the screen.
Here is a Video of Google showing this new ribbon off!
You can drag these “apps” up and down on the ribbon to arrange them in the way you would like to, when you hover over these apps it shows quick links to certain abilities related. Like when you hover over the “Photos” you have a button to upload from there, and also straight from a phone. “Taken together, these powers make it easier to access your favorites, and to adjust your preferences over time. We’ve also built the ribbon with the future in mind, giving us an obvious (and clutter-free) space for The Next Big Feature, and The Feature After That. So stay tuned.” (Google Official Blog)
Your profile also got a nice upgrade, seemingly using a design from Facebook’s own timeline, you have a cover photo which lays underneath your profile photo. Then the posts and all of that fun stuff runs down the left side of your profile and has friends on the right.
Google is trying to make Google+ the easiest to use site for social networking, and this is a step forward, but not yet a step past Facebook. This is a fantastic new update to a Networking site that really needs to find it’s niche to keep growing in.
